SNAME New York Metropolitan Section Holds First 1977 Meeting—Jakobson Honored

The New York Metropolitan Section of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers held its first meeting of 1977 at the New York Coliseum. The 67th New York National Boat Show at the Coliseum was open to industry representatives at this time. The meeting was chaired by the vice chairman, Nicola Pergola. Mr. Pergola presented Irving D. Jakobson with a certificate of recognition for his accomplishments and contributions to the marine industry. Mr.

Jakobson was president of Jakobson Shipyard, and has been a member of SNAME for 50 years.

The Papers Committee chairman, John Daidola, began the technical session of the evening by introducing Raymond Allen and Robert Jones, who authored the paper "Structural Design of High Performance Craft." The paper was presented by Mr. Allen. The authors' paper is a comprehensive approach to the structural design of high-performance surface ships. Discussed were structural trials data from several planing hulls and one high length/beam ratio surface effect ship. The collective data were used to modify several well-known methods for predicting hydrodynamic loading and structural response of planing hulls, hydrofoils, air cushioned vehicles and surface effect ships. The merits and weaknesses of these and other less well-known methods were discussed. Simplified methods developed by the authors were presented for determining design limit pressure for hydrofoils, air cushioned vehicles and surface effect ships which should produce consistent, yet not overly conservative results.
