Navy Awards 8 FFGs To Todd And Bath To Cost $402.5 Million

The Navy has awarded a total of $402.5 million in contracts for eight guided-missile frigates (FFGs) to Todd Shipyards Corp.

and Bath Iron Works Corp. These are the second FFG production contracts awarded to each of these firms.

Todd Shipyards received a $251.7-million contract to build five of the 440-foot escort and patrol vessels. In addition, the Navy has an option to purchase five to seven more vessels from Todd. The frigates will be built at Todd's Seattle, Wash., and Los Angeles, Calif., shipyards.

Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, a subsidiary of Congoleum Corp., was awarded a $150.8-million contract for three frigates. The Navy has an option to purchase three or four more ships from Bath.

The contracts cover only the hulls. The weapons, engines and other equipment will be purchased under separate contracts.

Altogether, the Navy plans to pay $1.3 billion for the eight frigates it's purchasing this year.

It plans to buy nine of the vessels next year.
