United Polish Shipyards Executives Visit U.S.A.
Leading executives of Poland's shipbuilding and associated industries recently visited Eastern, Midwest and Gulf areas of the United States. The visitors included Andrzej Adamczyk, director, Ministry of Heavy Machinery (Warsaw) ; Mieczyslaw Tokarz, director, United Polish Shipyards (Gdansk) ; Clemens Walkowiak, director, Centromor (Gdansk), and Marian Kolodziejski, manager, International Cooperation (Gdansk).
The United Polish Shipyards, emerging from World War II, suffering practically total devastation of port and shipbuilding resources, have in 30 years emerged as leading builders of high-technology vessels in Europe.
Over 70,000 shipyard workers and 3,000 engineers and naval architects comprise the United Polish Shipyards.
Eighty-three vessels of 23 different designs will be delivered in 1977 to Eastern and Western European shipowners. The present order book includes chemical tankers with stainless-steel tanks, OBOs, ore carriers, LPG carriers, ro/ros, containerships, combination ships, general cargo ships, fishing vessels and mother ships.
A 75,000-cubic-meter LPG tanker for Northern Natural Gas Co. of Omaha, Neb., will be launched in May, marking the first vessel for a U.S. owner. Last year's deliveries included a 55,000-ton-lift capacity f l o a t i n g drydock for Gotaverken Shipyard in Sweden.
Production of slow-speed and medium-speed diesels continues to grow each year under licenses from Sulzer, Burmeister and Wain, and Pielstick. The Cegielski Works in Poznan are one of the leading producers of Sulzer engines in the world.
Centromor is the Polish organization that deals with the export of ships and ship-related equipment, as well as the import of these products. In North America, Gdynia America Line are agents for Centromor, with offices at One World Trade Center, New York, N.Y. 10006. Zdzislaw Pienkawa, formerly director of production for the Polish Yards is the Centromor representative in the U.S.
The visit of the United Polish Shipyards group concluded with a reception given by Capt.
Tadeusz Draczkowski, chairman of the board, Gdynia America Line, held in their honor at the Top of the World Club, World Trade Center, with leading members of the shipping and ship design community in attendance.
