Geological Survey And USCG Plan Joint Study Of Offshore Issues

A c c o r d i n g to the American Waterways Operators, Inc., the Geological Survey and the Coast Guard have announced plans to begin a joint study of the adequacy of existing s a f e t y and health regulations, and of the technology available for exploration, drilling, development and production of oil and gas on the Outer Continental Shelf.

This study is mandated by the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act Amendments of 1978 (P.L.

All offshore activities, except diving, will be included in the study. The Coast Guard notes that it is particularly interested in occupational safety and health in maritime and industrial operations and in environmental protection in connection with transfer of oil or hazardous materials between vessels and facilities.

The Marine Board of the National Academy of Sciences has been asked by the Geological Survey to provide substantial input.
