Dragger/Scalloper 'Settler'

Recent delivery by Edward T. Gamage, Inc. shipyard was the Cat-powered dragger/ scalloper Settler, designed by Woodin & Marean, Inc. and constructed for Capt.

Didrik Didriksen. erated hold capacity of more than 200,000 pounds of iced fish, is built of 5/16-inch Cor-ten steel, reinforced and strengthened at points subject to local stresses from fishing gear.

The Settler is powered by a

Caterpillar D398 diesel driving a 74-inch by 50-inch, four-blade Co- lumbian Bronze propeller at a gear ratio of 4:1. During her delivery trip, on the 130-mile leg from

Maine to Cape Cod, she averaged 11 knots.

The vessel has an overall length of 90 feet 8 inches, length at the waterline of 83 feet 4 inches, beam of 23 feet 6 inches, molded draft of 9 feet IV2 inches, and maxi- mum draft of 11 feet 8y3 inches.

Bedford, Mass.

Maine, the Settler is the ninth fishing vessel built by the Gamage yard during its first three years of operation. She represents Woodin & Marean's solution to the prob- lems facing fishing vessel design- ers today—to satisfy the require- ments of an experienced skipper/ owner while producing a boat hav- ing required strength and stabil- ity with a minimum of weight.

P. Fricks, formerly controller and treasurer, is appointed vice presi- dent, finance; William H. Smith, formerly corporate director of contracts, is appointed vice presi- dent, planning; and Luis R. Lazo continues as president of Newport

News Offshore Systems (NNOS), and in addition is appointed pres- ident of another subsidiary, New- port News Industrial Corporation (NNI). He replaces Herbert B.

Knight, who is now on special assignment.

Contracts Administration will now report to W.R. Phillips Jr., whose title is revised to vice pres- ident, marketing. Cost Engineer- ing will remain within the finance organization, and will absorb all cost estimating functions now as- signed elsewhere. 21
