May 2-5, 1983, Houston Discoveries big and small — "Oceans of Discoveries" — will be found at the 1983 Offshore Technology Conference, May 2 through 5, at the Astrodomain Complex in Houston, Texas. It will bring together leading authorities on the offshore industry, scientists, engineers and representatives from oil exploration, production and service industries.

In 1982 more than 108,000 people from 90 nations attended the conference, reaffirming the Offshore T e c h n o l o g y Conference (OTC) as the leading worldwide forum for the dissemination and exchange of technical information related to the development of ocean resources and the environment.

Attendance at OTC '83 should equal or surpass the 1982 conference.

The 1983 conference will provide a symposium for 39 technical sessions, with the presenta- tion of more than 207 technical papers, focusing on case studies of major offshore developments, new technologies in drilling and production, geological and geophysical advancements, platform design, construction and installation, transportation and developments in ocean mining.

An array of products and services unmatched in size and scope and encompassing more than 630,000 square feet of space will provide knowledge of industry advancements. The latest improvements and innovations in hardware and services available to the total offshore industry will be shown by 2,500 exhibiting companies.

Vast areas of the world's continental shelves remain completely unexplored, not to mention undeveloped, and it is inevitable that these areas will and must be explored and developed in years to come. The scientific promise offered by the oceans goes far beyond the singular challenge of oil and gas exploration and production. The potential of renewable mineral resources, represented by the re- cent discovery of new deposits of polymetallic sulfides, and the quest for world food sufficiency involving aquaculture experimentation, are just two examples of the realms to be explored.

The development of these marine resources will require the utilization of all major fields of engineering and science and the cooperative efforts of leading societies will turn dreams into reality.

This is the premise on which OTC was founded.

The 11 societies that sponsor OTC account for more than 500,- 000 members worldwide and span every technology associated with the exploration and production of ocean resources and environment protection. It is this cooperation that will continue to make the Offshore Technology Conference the definitive, stateof- the-art technical conference and exhibition for the offshore industry.

Technical Program The resources of the ocean and the newest technology in obtaining those resources will be examined in the 207 technical papers to be presented. The papers were selected from more than 790 submitted to the OTC Program Committee. The chairman of the committee is Capt. Don R. Wells, USN, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Alexandria, Va.

"The selection of technical papers has been increasingly competitive over the last few years, and the papers that were selected for OTC '83 really represent the cream of the crop," said Captain Wells. "Each paper went through a detailed review process by the 12-member program committee, with additional evaluation from each committee member's subcommittee.

We think the papers represent the latest and most significant technology in the offshore field." Many of the papers will focus on offshore platform design, construction and installation. Among these will be a session devoted to the Tarsiut Caisson Island, an artificial drilling island constructed in 1981 in the frozen environment of the Canadian Beaufort Sea. This session, which will include five presentations, is scheduled for the morning of May 3.

Energy experts will discuss new technologies in drilling and production areas. One pioneering effort in particular, the Central Underwater Manifold Centre Project, will be the subject of an intensive review. The UMC, a project of Shell and Esso Exploration and Production, United Kingdom, is the world's largest and most complex subsea production facility. It is located in the North Sea. The five papers on this project will be presented during the afternoon of May 4.

New technology, especially that used in geological and geophys- ical investigation, will be reviewed at the conference by the scientists and technicians who have developed it. One process, a new seismic-logging tool known as vertical seismic profiling, has provided those exploring for petroleum offshore a look ahead of the drill bit through the use of digital computers. It is expected to have a major impact on the collection of accurate information on seismic wave propagation.

This session will be held during the afternoon on May 3.

Another session will address the vast resources beneath the ocean floor and the economics of deep ocean mining. That session is scheduled for the afternoon of May 2.

Exhibits The entire Astrodomain has been reserved for exhibits of equipment and services. The 2,500 exhibiting companies, up 200 from last year, is a testimonial to the effectiveness of OTC. In the first year of OTC only 200 companies had exhibits.

Each year since 1969 the total number of companies participating has grown rapidly.

In 1969 the exhibits occupied 38,500 net square feet of space.

This year there will be 631,000 net square feet of exhibit area and some prospective exhibitors had to be denied space for lack of room.

Awards Luncheon At the annual OTC Awards Luncheon on May 2, Peter R.

Vail, senior research scientist for Exxon Production Research Company, will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals for contributions to the industry. Cameron Iron Works of Houston will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies. Myron A.

Wright, Cameron chairman and chief executive officer, will accept the award.

Mr. Vail will receive the award for his development of a fundamental geologic concept that has had broad implications in understanding the way that oceans have acted through geologic time, He has made outstanding contributions to offshore geology and geophysics by research on stratigraphy and petroleum accumulation.

His concepts have led to improved methods of geologic age determination and stratigraphic prediction from seismic data.

Cameron Iron Works will be recognized for the development, design, manufacture and installation of the first caisson subsea completion system. The caisson system is the first subsea completion with its critical components below the mudline, providing maximum protection and safety in offshore installations where anchors, nets, trawlboards and icebergs pose hazards to subsea completions.

General Shuttle Bus Service—OTC will provide complimentary shuttle bus service between the Astrodomain Complex and all hotels and motels listed with the OTC Housing Bureau and the official travel agents during the conference.

Astrodomain Parking—Special parking permits that allow "Inand- Out" privileges during conference days will be available at all "Early-Bird Registration" sites. Additionally, special parking permits can be purchased in the Exhibitor Services Areas in the Astrodome, Astrohall and Astroarena. There is also onetime parking. Vehicles are prohibited from parking overnight.
