Port Facilities Engineering

Seminar Set By AAPA

For January 28-30, 1991

The American Association of Port

Authorities (AAPA) will conduct a port facilities engineering seminar

January 28-30,1991, in Los Angeles,

Calif. The theme of this program is "Dynamics in Design for an Indus- try on the Move," A wide range of major facilities engineering issues critical to port management profes- sionals will be addressed.

Topics to be discussed during the two and one-half day seminar in- clude: trends in shipping, including the move to post-panamax vessels; automation and its effect on termi- nal design; what's new and foreseen in breakbulk, neo-bulk and bulk fa- cilities; the latest in crane design; intermodal trends and resulting fa- cility design considerations; plans for an electronic graphics manual; and reducing dredging costs at river facilities.

Founded in 1912 and headquar- tered in Alexandria, Va., AAPA's membership includes public port authorities and firms with related interests from throughout the West- ern Hemisphere. This seminar is part of the Association's 1991 edu- cation and training program. 'Call To Action' Sounded

For U.S. Maritime Industry

At 'Sea Lines' Seminar

The Greater New York Chapter of the Surface Navy Association and the U.S. Naval Institute recently cosponsored a "Sea Lines of Com- munication" seminar at the U.S.

Merchant Marine Academy, Kings

Point, N.Y.

The keynote address was given by

Vice Adm. Paul D. Butcher, USN,

Deputy Commander-in-Chief, U.S.

Transportation Command.

The seminar served as a "call to action" for the U.S. maritime indus- try as the demands of Operation

Desert Shield demonstrate serious

U.S. sealift shortcomings. 66 Maritime Reporter/Engineering News
