Rapp Hydema has, within the last three years, won Þ ve major research con- tracts. Each includes complete outÞ ttings of winches for new government research vessels with a variety of state-of- the-art winches, plus launch-and-recovery systems (LARS) and sophisticated winch control and powering devices. South Africa, Australia, Namibia and the U.S. are repre- sented among the customers here. The largest-scale deck machinery package for a research vessel ever recordedÑfor AustraliaÕs CSIRO vesselÑwas one of the Þ ve. This pack- age includes no less than 180 tons of deck machinery. Apart from multimillion-dollar research vessel contracts in- volving provision of varied deck machinery, Rapp also won a key ROV winch contract with UNOLS member Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in 2012. This winch, with Active Heave Compensation (AHC) and other technologi- cal advances, will be sea trialed soon. Rapp Hydema has grown substantially recently as a result of these activities. Rapp, providing integrator services as a Single-System Vendor (SSV) in recent years, purchased Seattle-based Hydra Pro, a manufacturer of cranes and A- frames, in 2011. Hydra ProÕs production facility, which is ISO 9001: 2008 certiÞ ed, marks a sharp upgrade for RappÕs U.S-based manufacturing footprint. Rapp also purchased a nearby property with a 3200-sq. ft. warehouse. Present plans for further expansion include likely acquisition of a Kodiak, AK, service center. www.seadiscovery.com Marine Technology Reporter 63MTR #6 (50-65).indd 63MTR #6 (50-65).indd 637/23/2013 9:11:31 AM7/23/2013 9:11:31 AM
