NSSC Awards

Study Contract To

Gibbs & Cox, Inc.

Gibbs & Cox, Inc., New York,

N.Y. has been awarded a $90,000 cost-plus fixed-fee contract for de- sign study of potential economic advantages in employing a com- mon hull for both antisubmarine and antiaircraft warfare escort ships. The award, which was made by the Naval Ship Systems Com- mand, will require the preparation of three preliminary designs by

Gibbs & Cox, and to address "phi- losophy of commonality." The re- sults of this study should be ready by mid-June.

Two Firms To Build

Air-Cushion Craft

Aerojet General Corporation, a subsidiary of General Tire & Rub- ber Company, and Textron Inc., a subsidiary of Bell Aerospace Com- pany, will build air-cushion landing craft under letter contracts award- ed by the Navy.

Although each company has re- ceived $1,000,000 to construct two vessels, the Navy anticipates spend- ing approximately $18 million at each firm to complete the proto- type programs. The 94-foot vessels, capable of carrying about 75 tons, will be able to attain speeds of 50 knots.

A 100-ton surface effects ship, equipped with axial flow-lift fans and a pair of waterjets to drive the vessel at 90 knots, is under con- struction by Aerojet in association with Tacoma Boatbuilding Com- pany, Inc., under a $10 million funding from the Navy and the

Maritime Administration.

New Huntington Alloys

Handbook Available

A new 52-page handbook, which is an excellent reference manual on

Huntington's corrosion-resistant high-nickel alloys and welding products, has been published. All commercial products are covered, including three new alloys recently introduced.

Specifications, compositions, prop- erties, and typical applications are among the information given. Also included in the handbook, are ex- tensive data on a variety of other materials, such as castings and steels.
