The task of the committee is to discuss the activities of Det norske

Veritas in Greece, to give recom- mendations to the Permanent Com- mittee, and to convey the Society's experience and know-how to the shipping community in Greece.

The Permanent Committee may authorize the Greek Committee to act on its 'behalf in matters con- nected with governmental surveys and, in this capacity, to give in- structions to Veritas-surveyors in

Greece.

The members of the committee represent Greek shipowners, ship- builders and other persons connect- ed with shipping. They are elect- ed for a period of three years at a time and may be reelected. The committee is to meet at least once a year.

Altogether, the fleet now classi- fied with Det norske Veritas totals 3,226 ships of 32.5-million gross tons registered in 71 different coun- tries.

Walter G. Riebling

John Drish, vice president- special products of Kearfott Ma- rine Products Division of The

Singer Company, Mt. Vernon, N.Y. 10550, has announced the promo- tion of Walter G. Riebling to di- rector-marine products.

A 30-year employee, Mr. Rieb- ling has been associated with Kear- fott's Marine Products operation exclusively, having served as as- sistant director for the past five years.

Mr. Riebling studied engineering at New York University. He is a member of The Society of Naval

Architects and Marine Engineers (Metropolitan Chapter), for which he served as secretary-treasurer for four years and held several com- mittee appointments over the years.

During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.

Matson Navigation

Names L.F. Hughes VP

Lyle F. Hughes, Matson Navi- gation Co. controller since 1965, has been appointed a vice president of the West Coast-based shipping organization. Mr. Hughes joined the line in 1961.

An increasing number of Greek vessels are now being classified with Det norske Veritas and at the last turn of the year, the figures were 166 ships totaling 1.75-mil- lion gross tons, or 11 percent of the fleet registered in Greece. As a consequence of this development and in order to strengthen the re- lations with the Greek shipping community, a Greek Committee of

Det norske Veritas has been estab- lished.

At the inaugural meeting which recently took place in Piraeus,

Ltd., London, was elected chair- man for the first two-year period.
