Plans To Purchase $36 Million Tuna Fleet

Plans for its purchase of the

Gann fleet of tuna fishing boats from the West gate-California

Corporation, San Diego, for $36 million have been announced by

Castle & Cooke, Inc., in San Fran- cisco.

The Gann fleet consists of 13 vessels. The purchase would in- clude a refrigerated tuna-carry- ing vessel and a marine hardware company.

The purchase offer was accept- ed by C.J. Hytrone Jr., the trustee for Westgate-California, which is in reorganization.

D.J. Kirchhoff, president of Cas- tle & Cooke, said the acquisition would be part of a previously an- nounced program to increase sup- plies of raw tuna for Castle &

Cooke's Bumble Bee brand. The company, which operates in 11 countries, is engaged in food pro- duction, including Dole bananas and pineapple and Bumble Bee seafood. It is also engaged in real estate development.

Both cor- porations also build custom ves- sels to owners' specifications or designed by inhouse engineering staffs.

Appoints Steinmeyer

John W. Steinmeyer has been named manager of engineering,

Industrial Pump Operation, for the Fairbanks Morse Pump Divi- sion of Colt Industries, according to W. Jackson Letts, vice presi- dent and general manager.

Mr. Steinmeyer will be respon- sible for the engineering depart- ment, quality assurance depart- ment, and the research labora- tory. Before joining Fairbanks

Morse, Mr. Steinmeyer was em- ployed by Bechtel, Bell Telephone
