SNAME San Diego Section Hears
Discussion Of Engineers' Tasks
Among the attendees at the San Diego Section,
SNAME, meeting were, left to right: Ralph J. Bradford, papers chairman; R.P. Nolan, chairman; Roger H.
Compton, author; C. William Bascom, secretary- treasurer, and Philip L. Weintraub, vice chairman.
Ralph P. Nolan Jr., chairman, San Diego
Section, The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, opened the February meeting in the traditional manner by asking all members and guests to introduce them- selves. After an enjoyable social hour and dinner, Roger H. Compton of the U.S. Naval
Academy presented a thought-provoking paper, "The Engineer and the Initial Con- ceptual Design of Marine Systems." Dr.
Compton described the engineer's multi- faceted involvement in the transformation of an abstract idea for a marine system into a physically and fiscally feasible conceptual design. The inherent duality of the engi- neer's role as concept developer and problem solver throughout the design evolution was emphasized. General principles were dis- cussed, then a methodology for applying those principles was developed.
George Uberti of National Steel and Ship- building Company pointed out in his written discussion that in addition to the role of con- cept developer and problem solver, the design engineer has a responsibility to standardize to the maximum practical extent.
GIANT BARGES — Two of a fleet of eight oceangoing barges under tow from Seatrain
Shipyard at the former Brooklyn Navy Yard, en route to Spain. The 8,500-dwt barges, each almost as long as a football field, are being built for Bulk Food Carriers of San
Francisco, Calif., to be used in servicing the
North Sea oil trade. The unmanned vessels will be loaded in Spain with drilling equip- ment and other supplies for oil rigs currently under construction in the North Sea. Sea- train Shipbuilding Corp., a subsidiary of
Seatrain Lines, Inc., also is building a special- purpose icebreaking barge for Crowley Mari- time Corp., to be delivered in May for service in the A1 "an oil trade.
