Named To New Posts At

Moore-McCormack Lines

Robert E. O'Brien, president of

Moore-McCormack Lines, Incorpo- rated, has announced the appoint- ment of Frederick W. Schneider as director of outport operations.

In his new position, Mr. Schnei- der will have the overall responsi- bility for the operational func- tions of the company at East

Coast ports other than New York.

Mr. Schneider attended the U.S.

Merchant Marine Academy at

Kings Point, N.Y. He joined

Mooremack in 1943 as third offi- cer on the S/S Mormacrey. In 1957, he came ashore as opera- tions manager in Boston, Mass., and has held various positions in the Lines' outport offices until the present date. Mr. Schneider will maintain his headquarters in

Philadelphia, Pa.

Peter J. Moody will assume Mr.

Schneider's former position as operations manager-Philadelphia, and will be responsible for the stevedoring, terminal and marine activities of that port.

Mr. Moody joined Mooremack in 1947 as an employee of Moore-

McCormack Stevedoring Company in Philadelphia, and in 1972 be- came assistant operations man- ager of the company's Philadel- phia office.

Moore-McCormack Lines is the ocean-shipping subsidiary of

Moore McCormack Resources, Inc.

Opens Marine Service

Center In Hong Kong

B&W Marine Service, a divi- sion of the Burmeister & Wain

Group of companies, marine diesel engineers of Copenhagen, Den- mark, has opened a Marine Serv- ice Center in Hong Kong at 131- 133 King's Road, North Point.

Robert Jensen, superintendent engineer, who has taken up the post in Hong Kong, came from a similar post at the B&W Marine

Service Center in Singapore.

B&W Marine Service has a worldwide net of service centers and authorized repairers who pro- vide technical service and spare parts supplies to owners of B&W marine diesel engines.

The B&W Marine Service Cen- ter is located at The East Asiatic

Company's offices at North Point,

Hong Kong. The latter company had for many years been B&W agents, and they are well-known to shipping people.

B&W Marine Service have es- tablished a cooperation with Brig- antine Services Ltd., where com- ponent repairs and reconditioning will be carried out.

Hongkong United Dockyards has for many years been author- ized repairers of B&W diesel engines, with backing of B&W know-how. Thus, a more compre- hensive B&W service is now available in the Port of Hong

Kong.

David N. Messer has been named assistant to the vice pres- ident-marketing, and Sam Griffis, account executive for the Jackson- ville sales district of TMT.

Mr. Messer's responsibilities will include corporate sales ad- ministration, plus research and development of marketing and sales activities. He previously spent seven years in marketing for two other marine transporta- tion firms.

Mr. Griffis comes to TMT with 20 years of experience in sales, marketing and governmental re- lations. He most recently served as field director and Washington representative for the National

Independent Auto Dealers Asso- ciation. Prior to that, he was man- ager of government accounts for a national intermodal freight com- pany.

TMT is a member of the Carib- bean Division of Crowley Mari- time Corporation, San Francisco,

Calif. TMT has provided uninter- rupted service to Puerto Rico from Florida ports over the past 23 years. Crowley acquired TMT in 1974.

Paper On Drydock Designs

Presented At San Diego Meeting

The San Diego Section of The

Society of Naval Architects and

Marine Engineers held its Sep- tember meeting at Caesar's Mis- sion Valley, San Diego, Calif.

Hans A. Hofmann, sales manager for MacGregor - Comarain, Inc., presented an excellent paper en- titled "Dry Docking — An Evo- lution."

The paper covered the various designs of drydocks currently used in the industry and the ad- vantages of the single-piece float- ing drydock over the multi-section dock. The problems of drydocking ships in older multi-section dry- docks was reviewed in depth. It was also noted that the U.S.

Navy, prompted by some recent accidents in drydocking, is cur- rently developing a procedure to certify Naval and commercial floating drydocks that are cur- rently docking Navy ships. A question and discussion period for the 54 members and guests in attendance concluded the meet- ing.
