Maritime Aids Of

Six Major Nations

The Maritime Administration (MarAd) has released a report which examines the financial as- sistance programs administered by the six major nations to their shipping and shipbuilding indus- tries. The study, which covers the period 1971-75, details the assist- ance rendered and evaluates their effectiveness.

The nations studied — Japan, the United Kingdom, Norway,

Sweden, West Germany, and

France—in 1975 occupied the six top positions in the world in terms of gross tons of shipbuilding de- liveries, and accounted for 37 per- cent of the world's fleet tonnage.

The report reveals that during the 1971-75 period, the assistance given to the shipping industries of the six nations averaged over $1.1 billion per year. In addition, the shipbuilding industries of these countries received an aver- age of $475 million per year.

The analyses of the maritime aids included investment financ- ing assistance, credit assistance, tax allowance programs, direct subsidies, cargo preference pro- grams on particular commodities, -now gives brighter, clearer echoes on a clutter-free screen.
