The San Diego Section of The

Society of Naval Architects and

Marine Engineers opened its 1978- 79 program year by holding its

September meeting at Caesar's

Mission Valley, San Diego, Calif.

Benjamin V. Andrews, maritime consultant, presented a compre- hensive paper entitled "Heavy

Lift Ship Design and Costs."

The paper covered the types of ships capable of carrying heavy lift cargo, which is defined as (1) a single unit of cargo in ex- cess of 100 tons weight, or (2) a single unit of cargo exceeding a length of 80 feet or a width ex- ceeding 15 feet. The author next described a series of parametric ship designs and costs that in- cluded a range of ship and barge sizes for the three basic methods of heavy lift cargo handling, lift, roll and float. The paper concluded with the problems that American- flag heavy lift vessels will have to overcome in order to be cost competitive.

The members and guests in at- tendance concluded the meeting with a question and discussion period.

The newest addition to a fleet of 50 shrimp boats, the 75-foot- long by 20-foot-wide by 10-foot- deep vessel has a fuel capacity of 12,500 gallons and a freshwater supply of 2,500 gallons. The fish hold can handle 2,600 cubic feet of shrimp.

The main engine on this vessel is a Kelvin Model TASC8 marine

Model TASC8 marine diesel engine rated 600 cubic feet of shrimp. diesel engine rated at 415 shp at 1,200 rpm. This engine is a 4-stroke cycle, direct injection, turbocharged and after-cooled type and drives a Reintjes gear- box with a 4.824:1 ratio.

Fresh water is delivered by a

Lerio 32V DC pressure set. The automatic pilot is Model 15B "Wood Freeman" directly con- nected to the steering wheel. The sounder is a Morrow Model 2001 depth sounder with transducer.

Two radios are onboard; one a

Patterson 310SSB and one Pierce-

Simpson VHF. A Cobra SSB CB is also installed along with a

Raytheon radar system.
