SYNOPSIS—The authors deal with the problem of compatibility between hull deflections and dis- tortion limits inposed by the op- erational requirements of the main propulsion machinery com- ponents. They evaluate the rela- tionship between manufacturer's requirements and the structural design of machinery foundations.

Presented are a set of recommen- dations capable of helping the de- signer meet the requirements of foundation stiffness. Also included are suggested methods and tech- niques of structural analysis and design to assist the designer.

SYNOPSIS — The fluidized-bed combustion process is described and its application to steam gen- erators is shown through the de- scription of demonstration proj- jects. A preliminary design for a marine coal-fired fluidized-bed steam generator and the asso- ciated system arrangement is shown and described. The system presented can provide for effici- ent coal-fired propulsion while meeting expected emissions con- trol requirements.

SYNOPSIS—This paper reports on actions to reduce the vibration on the Charles E. Wilson. A flow- control tunnel was fitted on the original ship. Later, highly skewed blades were fitted to the original controllable-pitch propel- ler hub. Vibration levels associ- ated with each change, and mod- el, full scale and calculated hull pressures in the flow-control tun- nel are reported.
