Nashville Bridge Delivers

Pair of Utility Barges

To Piling-Structures Inc.

A 120-foot deck barge destined for marine constriction use is launched on the Cumberland River by the Nashville Bridge

Company.

Two 120-foot by 45-foot by 7-foat deck barges have been constructed by Nashville

Bridge Company (NABRICO), Nashville, Tenn., for Piling & Structures, Inc., Jacksonville,

Fla.

The barges, the first constructed by NA-

BRICO for the Florida company, will be used in general construction work, carrying equip- ment and cranes. Each of the barges is classed by the American Bureau of Shipping for all ocean service.

Piling and Structures, Inc. is a 25-year-old marine contracting firm engaged in ;he con- struction of bridge foundations and waterfront structures as well as dredging operations. The company, which now has a fleet of lo barges and three towboats, recently entered the ma- rine equipment leasing market.

Headquartered in Nashville, NABRfCO is a wholly owned subsidiary of The American

Ship Building Company, Tampa, Fla. The company has been in the marine field for more than 60 years and is primarily concerned with the design, engineering and barges for river and ocean service as well as drydo:ks and towboats. neering calculations and generation of engi- neering drawings.

The centralized location of all the Technical

Departments provides the basis for Marinette

Marine to achieve all the engineering services and production coordination necessary to de- sign and construct complex commercial and military vessels.

New High Capacity 'K' Crane

Has All-Enclosed Machinery —Literature Available

The growing market for the transport of coal and other bulk cargo has led Hagglunds to develop their new K-type bulkhandling crane for mechanical grabs. Free literature is available describing this newly developed crane with photos, drawings and full data.

Marinette Marine Opens

New Technical Center —Brochure Available

Marinette Marine Corporation, Marinette,

Wis., recently opened the doors of thsir new multimillion-dollar, 42,600-square-foot Tech- nical Center located within the present boundaries of the shipyard.

The new complex sustains consolidated fa- cilities for the accommodation of MMC's En- gineering, Production Control and Production

Scheduling Departments. The Technical Cen- ter also houses MMC's numerical control com- puter generated ship design and construction services. These services provide for various applications such as ship hull fairing, engi-

The new crane is a 4-rope type with double hoisting winches. These winches are synchro- nized so that the grab can be opened or closed at any time during the loading cycle. In addi- tion, speeds are very high to achieve short cycle times. For example, with a 25-ton safe working load (full load), the hoisting speed is 40 M/min. Therefore, in practice, the K-type crane can achieve a handling capacity of up to 400 ton/hour.

The new design also incorporates important space saving advantages in machinery ar- rangement. Conventional crane designs call for the external installation of at least some of the winches. With the new K-type, space con- suming gears have been eliminated from the machinery. Valuable space is saved through the use of Haaglunds high-torque hydraulic motors directly connected to the rope drums and slewing pinions. This permits the internal installation of all winches in a water-proof housing while still cutting down on the exter- nal dimensions of the new crane.

Placing all machinery in a sealed housing has the further advantage of enabling all service to be conducted in an indoor environ- ment. Extreme weather conditions no longer prevent efficient and safer inspection and servicing even while at sea.
