ASNE Northern New England
Tours BIW Repair Facility
Councilman Norm Berge (left) and chairman John Culver (right) congratulate Comdr. Gary Voorheis, Commanding Offi- cer of the USS Conolly (DD 979), for a fine presentation on the capabilities of the Conolly at recent ASNE meeting.
At the invitation of Bath Iron Works (BIW), the members of the Northern New England
Section of the American Society of Naval En- gineers were recently treated to a tour of BIW
Portland Repair Facility. This operation is the result of the combined efforts of the city, state and private industry working to create a new business in Portland, Maine. Henry Stupin- ski, the general manager of the BlW facility, provided a first hand look at the corporation's newly acquired floating drydock, the shops, and the administration offices that support re- pair work at this facility. The drydock is large enough to accommodate an Iowa Class battleship.
After the dinner that followed, Comdr. Gary
M. Voorheis, the Commanding Officer of the
USS Conolly (DD 979), gave an in depth pre- sentation on the capabilities of the Conolly.
The ship is the 17th of the Spruance Class De- stroyers and is currently in overhaul at B1W-
Portland.
The Conolly, outfitted with the most ad- vanced underwater surveillance and fire con- trol equipment, has a primary mission of
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW).
