Renk Offers Literature
On RCF Generator Gears
Renk of Augsburg, West Germa- ny, has available new literature on the Renk-Constant-Frequency (RCF) gear unit. The publication states that all shipowners ask for more cost-effective power genera- tion onboard than was formerly pos- sible, and one answer is the Renk-
Constant-Frequency gear "RCF
System." The RCF System features a differential epicyclic gear and a
Renk Controller. An epicyclic gear unit with hydrostatic or electric su- perposition enables the generation of economic current onboard by the large diesel engine of the main pro- pulsion plant.
The literature mentions that the
RCF System constitutes a design solution that offers definite eco- nomical advantages, especially in plants incorporating low-speed die- sel engines and fixed-pitch propel- lers. However, the RCF System is also used with controllable-pitch propellers and in medium-speed diesel engine propulsion systems.
With the aid of the RCF System, the economy of the low-speed marine diesel engine is extended to include power generation onboard.
Installation variants of the RCF
System are listed, with diagrams, such as parallel, vertical, rectangu- lar, Z-arrangement as shaft- mounted generator, U-arrangement as shaft-mounted generator, and special solutions. The mode of func- tioning of the RCF System and the design of the system are also dis- cussed and illustrated with draw- ings, diagrams, and charts. Advan- tages of the RCF System are dis- cussed thoroughly, and the two vari- ants of the Renk-RCF gear unit are detailed along with diagrams.

Kidde Offers Free Brochure
On Total Fire Protection
Total fire protection is the subject of an eight-page full-color brochure from Walter Kidde, Division of
Kidde, Inc., of Wake Forest, N.C.
The company designs and manufac- turers a complete line of fire protec- tion equipment: portable extin- guishers; pre-engineered systems; and large-scale, custom-engineered systems for major applications such as refineries, pipelines, tankers, sat- ellite tracking stations, and energy storage facilities. Kidde also sup- plies the full spectrum of modern fire-fighting agents in the systems, including Halon 1301, carbon diox- ide, high and low expansion foam, and the leading dry chemicals.
The attractive three-hole- punched brochure states that in to- day's changing environment, it is becoming more important for com- panies to install in-depth safety and security systems that provide such functions as surveillance, detection, alarm, and suppression or inertion.

Walter Kidde can provide all phases of safety, security and protection system development from planning and surveying, through design and manufacturing, to commissioning, and after-sales service. Kidde's large-scale, engineered systems pro- tect ships, planes, manufacturing processes and facilities, LNG plants, pipelines, computer centers, radio and TV stations, libraries, and satellite tracking stations around the world, and the company's sales and service facilities at present en- circle the globe.
The publication points out that
Walter Kidde has an experienced team of project management engi- neers who oversee each phase of a contract and their responsibilities include customer liaison, planning and engineering coordination, site installation construction, and sys- tem commissioning. An important segment of Kidde's commissioning operation is the training of custom- ers' on-site safety teams in proper operation, inspection, and servicing of fire protection system equip- ment.
The brochure is well illustrated with color photos of various installa- tions protected by Walter Kidde systems, such as the liquefaction facilities located at Arzew, Algeria, the Zeebrugge, Belgium LNG plant, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, a series of 75 turbine compressor pump sta- tions inside Soviet Russia, various
LNG projects from Japan and the
USA, etc., as well as fire protection systems on huge LNG tankers.
