RFD Survival Liferaft Line

Gains Davit-Launch Approval —Literature Available

RFD Ltd. of Surrey, England, has now gained

U.K. Department of Transport approval for the davit-launched version of its new Surviva life- raft (shown below). The approval was granted after the raft had performed successfully in a series of strength tests carried out by DoT sur- veyors. Designated Surviva DL, the new line is available in 12-, 16-, 20-, and 25-person capaci- ties.

The principle of the davit-launch system is that the liferaft is inflated and boarded at deck level, and then lowered into the water with its full survivor complement on board. The system is particularly advantageous on vessels with high freeboard, where the alternative would be for survivors to jump into the raft from considera- ble heights, or to decend ladders. In either case, the possibility of a fall, which could cause injury, and of immersion in the water, with its asso- ciated risk of hypothermia, is greatly increased.

The RFD Surviva liferaft range introduced earlier this year is said to be the only liferaft specifically designed to meet the higher stan- dards of performance and construction laid down in the 1983 SOLAS Amendments.

Built from a recently developed material that is more hard-wearing than any previously used in liferaft construction, the Surviva line incorpo- rates a number of significant safety features.

These include newly designed water pockets and sea anchor for improved stability; a lower-pro- file canopy, which gives better performance in strong winds and enhances stability still further; and a new light, powered by a dry cell battery,

Dyvi Heavy Lift Vessel Busy

Transporting Semisubmersibles

The rig transporter vessel Ferncarrier (shown above), operated by Dyvi Heavy Lift of Oslo, recently completed her fourth transport of a semisubmersible drilling unit, the Penrod 73, from California to the Gulf of Mexico via the

Strait of Magellan.

This latest voyage took just over 42 days, dis- counting the time taken to land a sick riding crew member in Chile, for a total average speed of 13.6 knots. Daily averages as high as 17.6 knots were logged. This is the second such voyage from the U.S. West Coast to the Gulf of

Mexico, following two transports from Korea to the North Sea in 1983.

Following the delivery of the Penrod 73, the

Ferncarrier left immediately for Japan to pick up the big semisubmersible Dyvi/ Stena, owned by Stena and built by Mitsubishi's Hiroshima yard, for delivery to the North Sea. That voyage is expected to take about 34 days via the Suez

Canal.
