The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking applications from qualified individuals for the position of:
Marine Operations
Manager
This is a newly established position which exercises overall responsibility for the operation of the
Institution's 3 research vessels - RVs Knorr,
Oceanus and Atlantis II. It involves the preparation of operations proposals to sponsoring agencies, developing and administering operating budgets, and directing various aspects of ship operations including maintenance, crewing, policy, regulation and USCG inspection and liaison with other institutions and agencies. The incumbent super vises the Port Engineer, Port Captain, Naval
Architect, and Marine Operations Coordinator; and reports to the Institution's Associate Director for Scientific Operations. A thorough knowledge of research vessels, marine operations and USCG marine inspection regulations is required. Bach- elor's degree in Marine Engineering or related field is preferred, with 8-10 years of sea going experience (deck or engineering) on a merchant, naval or research vessel. JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides professional engi- neering and architectural services in research, ana- lysis and design for naval architectural and ocean engineering projects. Designs and analyzes struc- tures such as ships, barges, tugs, jacket platforms and semi-submersibles. Plans and conducts nonlin- ear hydrodynamic and structural analysis of float- ing and fixed structures at sea. Analyzes effects of nonlinear gravity waves upon floating and fixed structures at sea. Determines risk and reliability of offshore operations using probabilistic and statistic methods. Must present results of studies verbally and in written reports.
REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in Naval Architecture.
Must have 20 hours graduate coursework in ocean engineering; must have 20 hours graduate course- work in nonlinear gravity waves or six months'work experience in analysis of nonlinear gravity waves.
SALARY: S3.190 per month.
