U.S. Opens
Port Of Coos Bay
To Polish Ship Repairs
The U.S. Government, pushed by
Senator Bob Packwood (R-OR) and Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR), in concept, has given per- mission on a "case-by-case" basis for Polish fishing vessels operating off the Pacific Northwest coast to enter the International Port of Coos
Bay for long-term repairs and dry- docking service.
Frank Martin, general manager of the International Port of Coos
Bay said, "The agreement gives us the opportunity to bid on $22 to $24 million in annual maintenance of
Polish fishing vessels that ply Amer- ican waters. The Congressional teamwork that led to this decision is greatly appreciated by this region."
Currently, as many as 24 mid- water fishing vessels operate in the
Polish North American fleet. Be- cause drydock facilities in Coos Bay remain closed to the Polish vessels, this works is now being performed in Vancouver, British Columbia at a cost roughly 30 percent higher than the cost at Coos Bay.
