With A Soft Toughness Inside.

THAT'S THE

CUTLESS®

COMMANDER'

BEARING.

Tough-Engineered composite shell, 70% lighter than brass.

Soft-Thin, yet durable, nitrile rubber lining protects shaft from abrasion and scoring.

Smooth-Flat lands establish ideal water wedge lubrication, reducing friction and wear.

Inside COMMANDER bearings, the thin, soft nitrile rubber lining resiliently absorbs the pressures of grit and sand so the shaft won't have to. Yet this soft lining is tough and durable, resisting abrasion for long bearing life. Flat, smooth lands create a water wedge to enhance the formation of the water film between the shaft and the lands, keeping the lining eel-slippery, reducing the coefficient of friction.

Outside, the unique, fiberglass/epoxy composite shell can't corrode in place as brass shells do.

Takes hard knocks and is easier to remove and replace-with up to 70% less weight to handle.

Even under speed and load variations, the

COMMANDER bearing is tougher-inside and outside-designed to deliver new levels of performance economy.

A.W.O. ANNUAL ISSUE

This March 1988 issue marks a milestone in the publishing history of MARITIME REPORTER/Engi- neering News. It is the first A.W.O.

ANNUAL to be published by MAR-

ITIME REPORTER and it estab- lishes March as A.W.O. month.

Every year from 1988 on, the March issue will be the A.W.O. ANNUAL.

This annual issue decision was reached with the full cooperation and support of the American Water- ways Operators, Inc. Much of the editorial content was contributed by

A.W.O.

Truly national in scope, the

American Waterways Operators,

Inc., is the most prominent and influential industry organization throughout the entire U.S. shallow- draft sector—both coastal and in- land.

A.W.O. membership, including shipyards and vessel operators, now numbers over 300 companies, of which 200 are leading vessel opera- tors with fleets totaling more than 5,500 tugs and towboats and more than 32,000 barges.

MARITIME REPORTER is proud to be associated with A.W.O. in any effort to support the health and growth of the vast and vitally important coastal shallow-draft and inland sectors of the U.S. marine industry.
