Aquamaster-Rauma

Aquamaster CRP
An agreement has been signed
between AB Volvo-Penta and
Aquamaster-Rauma Ltd., giving
Aquamaster the worldwide right and
license to manufacture and market
products based on Volvo Penta's
patents and know-how regarding
counter rotating propellers. Volvo
Penta is entitled to utilize
Aquamaster-Rauma's know-how in
its product development and manu-
facturing.
The patent and know-how ex-
change agreement now signed en-
titles the Finnish company
Aquamaster-Rauma Ltd. to use the
Volvo Penta know-how and patents
for larger counter-rotating propel-
lers.
For Volvo Penta the agreement
opens up new opportunities to offer
its larger marine diesel engines, such
as the 16 liter TAMD162, as an al-
ternative combined with a larger
counter-rotating unit like the
Aquamaster CRP for workboats.
Aquamaster-Rauma Ltd. is one
of the leading manufacturers of ship
equipment, such as steerable pro-
pulsion units, winches, vessel boil-
ers and shipboard waste treatment
systems. Sales and marketing net-
work covers over 30 shipbuilding
countries.
The Aquamaster CRP propulsion
concept offers to the owner of the
vessel the following remarkable ben-
efits compared to a conventional
system: increased cargo/passenger
capacity of 2-10 percent; fuel saving
of 5-10 percent; lower machinery
investment costs of 10-20 percent;
less vibration; and lower noise level.
The unique Volvo Penta Duoprop
consists of a gear which drives the
two counter-rotating propellers—
where the shaft of the rear propeller
rotates inside that of the front pro-
peller.
The reported advantages of the
DP drive in combination with pow-
erful V6 and V8 gasoline engines or
high-speed diesels, compared with
corresponding engines and single
propeller drives, are as follows: Ac-
celeration is up to 30 percent faster.
Top speeds are up to two knots
higher. At the same time, fuel con-
sumption is 10-12 percent lower at
cruising speed.
