A design competition has been initiated for the near term ship which is to ultimately result in a design/ construction contract in the spring of 1992. In August, the Navy issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the initial design of two classes of sealift ships. One design calls for a ship not to exceed 950 feet in length, to be used for prepositioning purposes.
