Liner 'Royal Odyssey'

Successfully Upgraded

In Sembawang Shipyard

Sembawang's reputation as one of the leading cruise vessel repair yards in the region received a fur- ther boost with the successful up- grading of the luxury liner Royal

Odyssey.

The refit is in partnership with

Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven of Ger- many and marks the first such coop- eration between the two companies.

For a month, experienced special- ists from both yards worked round the clock to complete this contract.

Internally, all 410 passenger cab- ins have been refurbished, includ- ing all the passenger corridors, and the main stair-towers and aft stair- case have been given a new look.

Five lift cabins have also been re- newed.

Other work included repairs on machinery, supply and discharge systems, steel renewal and internal piping. The vessel was also grit blasted and new coasts of paint ap- plied.

Art Anderson To Do

Economic Concept Study

For Pierce County Ferry

Art Anderson Associates,

Bremerton, Wash., is doing an eco- nomic and concept study for a new ferry under a contract recently signed by the firm's president, Eric

Anderson, and the Pierce County

Public Works Department.

Art Anderson Associates won the contract as a result of a competition with Naval Architecture firms from the area. The concept study follows recommendations outlined in the

Waterbourne Transportation Study which was completed in May 1989 by the Public Works Department.

After the county accepts a con- cept, Art Anderson Associates will carry out engineering work on be- half of Pierce County, leading to a new construction contract. After a contract is awarded, Art Anderson

Associates will then serve as the owner's representative for liaison with the shipyard.

Enviro-Air Control

Forms Marine Division

Environment Control Systems

Corporation of Houston, Texas, long a leader in the development of pro- prietary equipment used to control relative humidity, temperature, and particulate matter of the air in en- closed industrial areas recently an- nounced the formation of a marine division.

As of January 1, 1992, the corpo- rate name became Enviro-Air Con- trol Corporation.

Joe C. Eller, president, said "This name change will more accurately describe our corporate mission in the solution of problems associated with the environmental control mar- ket of the '90s."

MTU Supplies CODAG

Propulsion Plant For 331 -Foot Car Ferry

MTU Friedrichshafen has been awarded the contract to provide the complete power plant for a new 331- foot-long car ferry, "Aquastrada", to be built by Rodriguez Cantieri

Navali. The CODAG propulsion system will consist of a gas-turbine module based on the LM 2500 from

General Electric, plus two MTU 16V 595 TE70 engines. The LM 2500 gas turbine has an output of 27,880 HP, and the total power of the two die- sels is 9,700 HP.

A corresponding propulsion mod- ule for the LM 2500 is presently being built at MTU. This gas tur- bine has already been installed over 400 times in naval vessels, for the most part by the manufacturer, GE; in some cases, MTU has also sold the LM 2500 as general contractor for the complete power plant.

The module which MTU is now building for commercial vessels weighs only 16 tons, making it 6.5 tons lighter than the military ver- sion with the same dimensions.

MTU has already developed the cor- responding ECS GT 25 electronic monitoring system and has installed it for several plants. This system controls and monitors the LM 2500 gas turbine.

The reduction gears for the die- sels as well as for the gas turbine will be supplied by Renk Tacke

GmbH. The reduction gears are noise optimized, taking advantage of the company's considerable expe- rience in the manufacture of naval equipment. The aluminum hous- ings provide a major reduction in weight.

The "Aquastrada" will be 331 feet long with a beam of 47.5 feet and will have a 991 dwt. She will carry between 400 and 500 passengers plus 20 crew members, and have space for 90 to 120 vehicles. The service speed of the ship when fully loaded will be about 40 knots for a range of400 nautical miles with the standard fuel tanks, or 780 nautical miles when the supplementary tanks are filled. The customer already has an option for an additional two ves- sels of this type from Rodriguez.

STEEL-SPRING

FLEXIBLE COUPLINGS us

LO-REZ helical steel-spring couplings, with their low, constant and accurately-controlled torsional stiffness factors, provide excellent torsional characteristics for geared marine reciprocating propulsion systems, engine and reciprocating compressor drives of many vari- eties, locomotive drives, etc.

LO-REZ was one of the first coupling manu- facturers, 40 years ago, to recognize the im- portance of torsionally-soft couplings in power transmission systems, particularly in reciprocating, variable speed systems and those involving gearing.

STEEL-SPRING

VIBRATION ISOLATORS _ BR4-LS

LO-REZ manufactures a broad line of sturdy steel-spring vib- ration isolators. The BR series isolators (shown here) with their ample thrust capacity and rubber-cushioned, adjust- able stops (to limit excess ver- tical excursion) are widely used for marine auxiliary, other mobile and seismic applications. No external chocks are required. BR-T series isolators have spe- cial spring-loaded thrust housings to carry the full propellor thrust effects, the full engine torque, and still provide excellent isolation. They are ideal isolation supports, also, for machinery rafts in ships.

With the growing demand for acoustical and vibration attenuation treatment in ships, the isolation of main propulsion engines is fast becoming a necessity rather than a luxury. LO-REZ has many years of experience in analyzing the dynamics of soft-mounted propulsion engines, and has the products to provide integrated iso- lation systems which include two-directional thrust-type RT flexible couplings for the gear output shaft.

VISCOUS TORSIONAL

VIBRATION DAMPERS

LO-REZ manufactures both the conventional un- tuned viscous dampers and its new patented mechanically-tuned viscous dampers. Extensive research has shown that the single and compound tuning methods, as developed by LO-REZ, reduce resonant amplitudes by some 40% and 60%, res- pectively, of the untuned values.

Aluminum alloy ribbed housings of robust design provide cooler operation with less variance be- tween cold and hot performance. Dampers are bolted construction and are serviceable with facto- ry rebuild program. LO-REZ forced-damped com- puter program handles very large and complex power trains and provides for optimization of damper size and characteristics. Standard damper sizes are available as well as custom-engineered models.
