Westfalia Separator has developed new treatment systems that relieve the operator from monitoring and adjustment tasks.

The advanced Unitrol system, a "self-thinking"system, can treat fuel oils as well as lubricating oil. When treating heavy fuel oils, the Unitrol centrifuge can be used either in single stage, single stage parallel or two stages (series operation).

In single stage, respectively par- allel operation, the Unitrol centri- fuge automatically adapts to func- tion as a clarifier or purifier depend- ing on the water content in the oil.

While purifying the oil, a small vol- ume of liquid is branched off, con- veyed by the sensing liquid pump, and monitored by the conductivity sensor. If the sensor registers wa- ter, the valve opens the water dis- charge. As soon as the sensor de- tects a change in the conductivity brought about by an increased pro- portion of oil, the water discharge is closed.

When operating in the two stages (series operation), any solids or wa- ter carried over from the first stage into the second stage and accumu- lating in its sludge holding space above a limited amount, will ini- tiate a desludging of both centri- fuges. Since desludging only takes place when the sludge space is filled, desludgings are carried out at long intervals. This results in less wear and much lower sludge disposal costs, according to Westfalia.

The "self-thinking" control of the second-stage Unitrol clarifier regis- ters a rise in desludging intervals, functioning as a good fuel monitor.

This patented "self-thinking" fea- ture which enables on-demand desludgings is reportedly only avail- able with Westfalia centrifuges.

Less maintenance, higher reli- ability and maximum efficiency will result in considerably lower opera- tion costs as well as savings in sludge handling disposal costs.

Oil Spill Response Vessel (OSRV) personnel responding to the Oil Pol- lution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) should be aware of Coast Guard require- ments for certification to transfer collected fuels to other ships, barges, or shoreside facilities. There is also

DOT and OSHA mandates for mini- mum training for crew and oil recov- ery workers involved in the han- dling of combustible/flammable haz- ardous material.

Pyro-Tech Fire School, Inc., Mo- bile, Ala., teaching U.S. Coast

Guard-approved courses, is offering a five-day course covering all of the elements necessary for full compli- ance. This training meets DOT re- quirements of Dangerous/Flam- mable Material Response and OSHA "Hawoper."

The course includes a USCG-ap- proved certificate for fuel/barge fire fighting. Additionally, it incorpo- rates the necessary preparation to take and pass the Coast Guard ex- amination for tankermen.

Egypt Considers Enlarging

Suez For Future Traffic

A plan to widen and deepen the

Suez Canal to meet future shipping demands through the next century is being considered by the Egyptian government. A canal expansion fea- sibility study being carried out by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has been delayed while the SCA reviews the requirements of new tanker de- signs and environmental and safety concerns.

The expansion would allow sig- nificantly larger ships to use the canal and would also serve to ease congestion during canal transits, leading to reduced delays and ship- ping costs. It is also anticipated that ports in the Eastern Mediterranean that serve as staging posts for goods moving through the canal would benefit from the improvements, in- cluding; Larnaca, Izmir, Athens,

Limasol, Tartous, Lattakia and Al- exandria.

Between 1975 and 1980, the ca- nal was expanded to handle 53-foot draft vessels, accommodating 150,000-dwt cargo ships and tank- ers of 370,000 dwt. The planned second expansion phase, costing between $700 million and $ 1 billion, would allow 67-foot draft dry cargo ships of260,000 dwt or 550,000-dwt tankers in ballast to transit the ca- nal.

Nynex Plans $1 Billion

Undersea Fiberoptic Cable

A $1 billion venture to link the

United Kingdom and Japan, via the

Indian Ocean, is being planned by

Nynex Corp., of New York, along with Middle Eastern and Japanese investors.

The high-capacity cable is ex- pected to be completed by December 1996. Construction will begin in 1994, after the project obtains the necessary contracts.

Using fiber-optic technology, the 120,000 circuits that will be used in the project could carry the equiva- lent of 600,000 simultaneous con- versations on two pairs of hair-thin strands of glass.
