GICA To Hold 87th

Annual Convention

October 14-16 In Texas

The Gulf Intracoastal Canal As- sociation (GICA) has announce that it will be holding its 87th annual convention from October 14-16 at the Sheraton South Padre Island

Resort Hotel in Texas.

All waterways interests are in- vited to join GICA members to ex- change information and views on matters affecting the Gulf

Intracoastal Waterways (GIWW) and tributary waterways.

Registration will start on Octo- ber 14, along with committee meet- ings followed by a welcoming recep- tion. General sessions will take place from October 15 until noon on Octo- ber 16.

New School For Marine &

Environmental Safety To Be

Located At Mass Maritime

The House Merchant Marine Sub- committee has selected the Massa- chusetts Maritime Academy to be the site of the new Massachusetts

Center for Marine Environmental

Protection, the first major academic curriculum in marine safety and environmental protection in the U.S.

The center's location will allow it to operate in conjunction with the

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institu- tion and the Harvard University applied sciences division.

Courses taught at the center will include international environmen- tal law, port and shipping proce- dures and oil spill response and con- tingency planning.

The funding bill that allocated $242,000 for the center was spon- sored by Congressman Gerry

Studds, who, if re-elected in No- vember, is expected to become chair- man of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee. Congress- man Studds also won committee approval for a $1.2 million oil spill simulator to be housed at the ma- rine center for use by both students and professionals in clean-up train- ing.

On Product Engineering

The Midwest section of the Ameri- can Society of Naval Engineers is sponsoring a major Product Engi- neering Symposium, "Product Engi- neering for Naval Systems, The Key to Quality, Today and Tomorrow," to be held in Louisville, Ky., Sep- tember 1-3, 1992.

The symposium will be hosted by several of the Navy commands in

Weapons Systems; Computer-aided

Acquisition and Logistics Support (CALS); Electronics Systems Design,

Repair and Manufacturing; Human

Engineering; and engineering sup- port for gun, submarine, launching, expendable ordnance and close-in weapon systems.

Orders To Metro Machine

Metro Machine Corp., of Norfolk,

Va., received two Navy contracts.

The first, $48.8 million for the phased maintenance program for CG 16- and CG 26-class guided-missile cruisers and a second award of $5.3 million drydocking selected re- stricted availability of the U.S.S.
