Jered Brown Brothers

Awards Contract To John J.

McMullen Associates, Inc.

Jered Brown Brothers Inc., the prime contractor to NAVFAC for construction of a prototype Elevated

Causeway (Modular) System (ELCAS(M)) subcontracted the en- gineering and ILS support services to John J. McMullen Associates, Inc. (JJMA).

ELCAS(M) is a modular pier ex- tending from a shoreline and is el- evated above the water. "Modular" indicates that this causeway is be- ing designed to be broken down into sub-assemblies and easily trans- ported, installed and operated, in remote locations anywhere in the world to support amphibious opera- tions.

The causeway is made up of as- semblies (pontoons) that are sized for ISO Standard. Each pontoon is connected to the adjacent pontoons to make up the full pier. The sea- ward end of the causeway is outfit- ted with a pair of cranes and pierhead to facilitate Sealifi and Auxiliary ship off-loading.

JJMA's involvement in this pro- gram includes development of the drawing package to detail design level, development of product speci- fications for each component, reli- ability and maintainability engi- neering, life cycle costing, systems engineering, test plan development, etc. JJMA is also preparing all ILS documentation, technical manuals, technical repair standards and all training documentation, and will be training over 100 Navy personnel in the operation and maintenance of this system. Lastly, JJMA will be involved in the final test of the sys- tem.

JJMA is a full service naval ar- chitectural firm supporting govern- ment agencies, commercial clients and industry with eight offices in locations throughout the U.S.

First Engines Of Deutz MWM 645 Series Delivered; Name

Changes For Engine Series

The first engines of the Deutz

MWM 645 big-engine series (power range from 2,550 to 4,140 kW at 600 rpm) were recently delivered and installed in container vessels at the

Sietas yard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde.

Altogether seven orders for nine- cylinder engines have been received, among others, from Sietas, all of which are expected to be delivered in the course of this year.

The Deutz MWM 645 engines, which went into series production in late 1992, are medium-speed diesel engines. In addition to marine ap- plications, they will also be used to drive power generating sets and pumps. With a long stroke and op-

September, 1993 timized injection system, the 645 series engines reach optimal fuel consumption values, with extremely low lube oil consumption. The en- gines' exhaust emissions stay below the limits specified by TA-Luft (Ger- man Clean Air Code). The engines running on gas oil can also be oper- ated with heavy fuel up to CIMAC K 55.

Also in Deutz news, the Deutz

MWM division of the KHD Group has now defined 616 as the name of the engines initially presented as 234B series.

The new name characterized the independent development of this se- ries which, although based on the experience gained from the 234 se- ries, features significant technical improvements with relevant effects on major components.

Deutz MWM has proceeded analo- gously in the case of the further

The new series' names will now apply to the overall Deutz MWM engine range, with the first digit referring to production status and site and the two following digits rep- resenting the increased stroke in centimeters.
