Hull Electronics Introduces

New Voice-Synthesized

Mayday Technology

Marine radios equipped with voice-synthesized mayday capabili- ties have helped to revolutionize distress signalling. The Hull Elec- tronics Synthesized Voice Mayday (SAVEN) unit reportedly improves upon mayday-signalling micro- phones. SAVEM attaches easily to

HF and VHF radios through the microphone and speaker jacks. In optional hardwired configurations,

SAVEM can turn the radio on, set it to high power, disengage any mes- sage scramblers and select Channel 16 or 2182 kHz, depending on the radio's capabilities. For more infor- mation on SAVEM from Hull Elec- tronics,

VideoMed: Beaming Aboard

Medical Assistance

A new high-tech maritime medi- cal network that beams emergency physicians aboard cruise ships by video to work side-by-side with ships' doctors in emergencies was intro- duced by VideoMed Corp. and Mari- time telecommunications Network (MTN) at a recent industry show.

Dubbed SaveNet™ (Shipboard

Access to Video in Emergencies

Network), the system was demon- strated in action from Carnival

Cruise Lines' M/S Ecstasy under- way in the Caribbean using Eclipse teleconferencing units supplied by

Compression Labs, Inc. Marking the first time that such transmis- sions have been done from a passen- ger ship at sea, VideoMed's chair- man Arthur H. Bleich said that more than 25 hours of live two-way video were transmitted over a 64 kbps full-duplex dedicated satellite circuit that does not interrupt rou- tine shipboard communications.

With the system, ship doctors can have instant, live, two-way, color- with-sound, full-motion video con- sultations with emergency special- ists on shore. The system can also be used for administrative, engi- neering, sales and marketing pur- poses when not in use for emergen- cies. For more information,
