DOT Reorganizes

Ten Agencies Consolidate Into Three

In a bold and comprehensive re- organization designed to streamline operations, increase efficiency and upgrade service to customers, Sec- retary of Transportation Federico

Pena said that the Department of

Transportation's 10 agencies will be consolidated into three: the Federal

Aviation Administration (FAA), U.S.

Coast Guard and a new Intermodal

Transportation Administration.

The decision follows more than a month of intense departmental analysis and consultation with Con- gress, state and local authorities and the public on whether to con- solidate along the lines just an- nounced, or alternatively, to divide the department according to its three missions of safety, infrastructure investment and Coast Guard.

Secretary Pena said the consoli- dation was chosen because it fosters intermodalism, streamlines pro- grams and eliminates duplicative functions; while also preserving cus- tomer linkages, strengthening con- nections between safety programs, infrastructure funding and con- struction activities, and supporting
