Introduce New Training System
Newport News Shipbuilding
NS) and Argent Marine have in- roduced Virtual Environment 'rainer (VET), a new training sys- em which combines personal com- uters with real-life images to Cre- te the "virtual environment" of hipboard operations and mainte- ance.
The companies believe it will fill critical need of commercial ship- wners for affordable, realistic, cus- om-designed training of the crews ho maintain and operate ships.
Operating a complex vessel, such s a 125,000-cu.-m Liquefied Natu- al Gas carrier, offers plenty of fi- ancial and technical challenges," aid Gary Van Tassel, vice presi- ent of operations, Argent Marine
Operations, Inc. "The crew's ability to effectively and economically oper- ate the ship and keep it on-line is a make-it-or-break-it proposition for the owner of a multi-million (dollar) ship." "Our training system uses a readily available personal computer, loaded with the actual images of the shipboard environment, to simulate the systems and situations the crew will face in an interactive fashion."
Scott Stabler, Newport News
Shipbuilding's director of Integrated
Logistic Support, said that the key to the success of the VET is the combined experience in shipbuild- ing and ship operation that the two companies have to offer. "We know how to build good ships and we know what it takes to oper- ate them effectively," said Mr. Sta- bler.
VET is designed to allow the ship- owner to get a custom-designed training system that shows the ac- tual equipment configurations aboard the ship whose crew will be trained.
This, in turn, means simulation of the critical operational proce- dures, casualty scenarios, reference drawings and record-keeping aboard that specific ship type. The heart of the system is NNS's proprietary,
Microsoft Windows-based interac- tive software program known as
TourMagic.

Containerships Target Of
New Engine Development
New Sulzer Diesel Ltd. devel- oped a larger-bore low-speed diesel engine specifically for the new gen- eration of larger, faster containerships. The Sulzer RTA96C will be introduced at an output of 7,465 bhp/cylinder (5,490 kW/cylin- der) at 100 rpm. The engine is to be built in configurations with up to 12 cylinders. The bore diameter of 960mm has been determined, through technical evaluation and market reviews, to be the optimum size for the new containerships with service speeds of around 25 knots or faster, the engine maker said.

Less means more. Less weight (up to 40% less than other remote operat- ing gear systems) and less complex installation (single-shaft design) mean more speed, greater payloads and more cost savings (maintenance, repair and opera- tion) for your company. And, our system is remarkably efficient. With as little as 50 ft. lbs. of input you can generate as much as 333 ft. lbs. output torque.
Tested, tried and true. All components are heat resistant, noncorro- sive. Shock- and Vibe-tested. Plus, the Uniflex system is flame tested to API-607 and submergence tested to MIL-STD-81OE. Our growing list of satisfied customers speaks for itself—call for references.
