Ulstein Deck Machinery has secured the first orders for new generation compact modular winch portfolio

Contracts to supply new genera- tion winches to ships building in

Japan, South Korea, Spain, Turkey and Sweden are providing valuable references for Ulstein Deck

Machinery's latest winch technolo- gy. Ulstein Deck Machinery's anchor winch is a completely new design, whereas its mooring winch is a refined version incorporating substantial improvements.

The new winches are the result of the combined design and engineer- ing expertise of both Brattvaag and Norwinch in the creation of a new range of mooring and anchor- handling deck machinery.

Compared with earlier concepts they are more compact and easier to install, benefiting from a new foundation design which improves and simplifies transfer of external forces to the ship structure.

Working in the world's most ecologically sensitive environment, the Antarctic Icebreaker and research vessel, Nathaniel B. Palmer relies on 640 mm (2S")

Thor-Lube stem tube bearings for pollution free reliability. The ship is also equipped with

Thordon rudder and thruster bearing systems.

Today's environmental challenges and government regulation demand a move from traditional oil lubricated stern tube systems to pollution-free alternatives.

The Thor-Lube bearing system combines proven Thordon XL bearings with Thor-Lube; a water soluble, environmentally friendly lubricant to deliver pollution-free performance. Wear life is comparable to conventional oil-lubricated systems and the system is considered equivalent to oil-lubricated by most Classification Societies.

Higher operating efficiencies can be expected with the Thor-Lube system. Operating friction is lower, particularly at start-up and higher shaft speeds. Similar in size to oil-lubricated bearings,

Thor-Lube bearings can be as easily integrated into conversion projects as new build.

According to Eirik Naess

Ulstein Deck Machinery's develop ment manager at the Norwincl

Division, the compact dimensions of the new design have a numbei of advantages when applied tc restricted foredecks such as on containerships. Minimal deck space on such vessels very often limited the possibilities of getting a good arrangement with the earli- er design winches and windlasses.

With more compact dimensions, the new design offers significant layout benefits.
