U.K. Dept. Of Trade Greenlights Mallard Field Development

Exxon said that the U.K. government's

Department of Trade and Industry has approved the subsea development of the

Mallard field in the U.K. sector of the central

North Sea. Esso Exploration and Production

U.K. Ltd., Exxon's affiliate, holds a 38 percent interest in the field, which will cost about $155 million to develop. Production from Mallard is due to come on stream in October 1997, and is expected to reach a daily production rate of 16,000 barrels of oil and 11 million cu. ft. of gas.

The field is estimated to hold about 30 million oil equivalent barrels. The Mallard field is the first of a new generation of High Pressure/High
