Thorne Installed As AAPA

Mike Thorne, the Port of

Portland's executive director, was recently installed as chairman of the American Association of Port

Authorities (AAPA), making him the fourth AAPA chairperson to be elected from Portland in just over three decades. Before joining the

Port of Portland, Mr. Thorne served 17 years in the Oregon sen- ate, and chaired the Ways and

Means Committee.

Welch, executive director of South

Carolina State Ports Authority, with a service award for outstand- ing leadership and noteworthy accomplishments. Mr. Welch has been an AAPA director for 13 years, and served as chairman from 1980 to 1981.
