Pier Upgrade Uses
Innovative New Technology
An ij*riovative technology using carbon reinforced elastic (FRP) laminate to strengmen older piers is now in sepm;e at Pier 11 at
Norfolk N^val Station. The upgrade reportedly increases the pier's strengHfcJjyl5 percent and removes restriction^^ the use of 70-ton cranes. installation involved epoxy-lanunating FRP to the bottom of iJ^e pier spans to increase stiffness, stop cracks from spreading and!increase strength.
The upgrade his a design life of 20 years and wasfcnstalled while the pier remained m use. Upgrades are designed to extend the useful :ebruary, 1997 life of existing piers, while saving on costs associated aa±h complete rebuild project.
