TANKER TECHNOLOGY (Continued, from page 42) tion — a key component in stop- ping the vessel in short distances.

The addition of a separate bowthruster will provide even greater maneuverability in tight conditions. Completing the redun- dant design are two independent rudders, each with its own steering system. This provides redundancy, as well as increased maneuverabil- ity in case of emergency. Using this advanced propulsion package, the vessel can turn through a com- plete 360-degree turn in its own length. In fact, using just one rud- der, the Millennium Class exceeds

IMO maneuvering standards.

Data Courtesy of Rodriguez Engineering,

Millennium Class vessel is designed to be outfitted with next- generation navigation, electronics, command and control systems as well. Included on the bridge will be Electronic Chart Display and

Information Systems (ECDIS), three automatic plotting collision avoidance radars, and Global

Marine Distress Safety System (GMDSS).

Overall, the bridge will be high- ly automated with an emphasis on presenting all pertinent informa- tion in one concise area, allowing the operator more time to formu- late responses instead of searching for data. Taking an additional step, propellers, rudder and bowthruster will all be controlled via a control stick.

The concept has also been extended to the efficient command and control of the machinery, cargo and firefighting equipment. For example, the engine and machin- ery controls are not only redun- dant in the engine rooms, but are also integrated into the bridge con- trol system.
