The second of seven
Strategic Sealift Ships being built for the U.S.
Navy was recently christened at the west- bank shipyard of
Avondale Industries,
Inc.
Like the first Bob
Hope Class vessel,
USNS Fisher (T-AKR 301) will support the nation's ability to deploy military equip- ment and supplies quickly to U.S. troops worldwide. The Sealift contract provides for the construction of up to seven Sealift ships. Five vessels are currently under construction.
One option each for the remaining two ships will be awarded in 1998 and 1999. Once exercised, these options will bring the Avondale Sealift program to a total of seven ships.
