ORBCOMM's 10-stage Countdown to Global Service. "The addition of two satellites to our constellation brings us a big step closer to our goal of providing affordable, portable, near real- time communications everywhere on the planet," said Alan Parker,

ORBCOMM president and CEO.

When the two new satellites are operational, ORBCOMM's commu- nications availability in the U.S. will increase to more than 50 per- cent, with satellites in view more than 12 hours per day.

In addition, ORBCOMM plans to launch 16 more satellites by mid-1998, further increasing com- munications availability world- wide.

Fifth lnmarsat-3 Launch

A Success

The fifth and final satellite in the Inmarsat-3 series (F5) was launched successfully in February, on an Ariane 4 rocket from

Kourou, French Guiana.

The satellite will serve as a fully functional spare for the series which already comprises four suc- cessful satellites.

It will also carry commercial communications, providing addi- tional capacity for maritime, aero- nautical and land mobile commu- nications in the Indian Ocean and

Atlantic Ocean East regions.

A key feature of the Inmarsat-3 satellites is their ability to concen- trate power on particular areas of high traffic.

Each satellite utilizes up to a maximum of seven spot beams, depending on traffic demands, and one global beam. Inmarsat-3 is reportedly eight times more pow- erful than the previous generation of Inmarsat-2 satellites.

The complete Inmarsat-3 con- stellation also includes Fl, cover- ing the Indian Ocean region, F2, covering the Atlantic Ocean East region, F3, over the Pacific Ocean region and F4, providing Atlantic

Ocean West coverage.
