Trimaran Helps to Keep Vosper rhornycroft at Forefront of Technology

Vosper Thornycroft's (VT) winning of the intract to design and build the first trimaran arship demonstrator, RV Triton, will main- lin the company's position as a world leader a naval ship technology.

The Defence Evaluation and Research

Agency (DERA) awarded the contract for the 295.3 ft. (90 m) long warship. One of the pur- poses of the demonstrator will be to deter- mine whether a trimaran hull form will be Vessel Specifications suitable to be considered for the Future (all data are approximations)

DERA's research followed up the research performed by the MOD sponsored chair at University college in London, in the late 1980s. Trimarans have been extensively used in the design of commercial yachts, but in that case, design requirements are com- pletely different. Scaling up would not be representative of a warship.

Additional advantages to the vessel include:

Seakeeping: Improved seakeping performance compared with a sim- ilar displacement monohull, allowing higher speed to be maintained in heavy seas.

Flexibility: Larger deck area amidships allowing space for an addi- tional helicopter if required and increased helicopter availability through siting the flight deck in the amidships region where motions are reduced.

Vulnerability: Limited stand off protection provided by the side- hulls against smaller sea-skimming missiles, and improved survivabili- ty following underwater explosions.

Signature: The possibility of exhausting between the side-hulls is
