ABB aluminium motors to drive many essential functions onboard. This includes pumps for the delivery of fuel and chilled water for water-cooled equipment, crucial for the ship's sur- vival. After stringent tests, the shipyard and the Navy have concluded the ABB motors are adequate for the duty. "We work to military standards but use commercial standards whenever we can. Sometimes we take test certificates at face value; sometimes we perform our own test. At the end of the day, it is down to what level of risk we can accept," says Michel Janssen, Head of
