Hyundai Orders Five

MAN B&W Engines

The largest diesel engine ever designed has been requested by the

Korean owner Hyundai Merchant

Marine for propelling five 6,400 TEU container vessels. The five engines, which will be constructed and tested in

Korea by MAN B&W Diesel licensee

Hyundai Heavy Industries, are due for delivery to the yard in late 2000 and early 2001 — the first vessel will be delivered in early 2001.

Noted as the most powerful low speed containership engine on the market today, the 12K98MC-C has an output of 7,760-bhp/cylinder, e.g. 93,120-bhp at 104 rpm. for this 12-cylinder version.

As a result of this order, 20 additional models of this engine are currently on order or in production.

Samsung Heavy Rings Up

Significant Orders To

Usher In New Year

Piraeus-based Hellespont Shipping

Corp. has contracted Samsung Heavy

Industries for the first two vessels in a new class of VLCC's. The contract also calls for the option to build two optional ships — with delivery beginning in the last quarter 2001.

With a lightweight of 46,500-tons, the vessels are touted as forming a new stan- dard for large tanker strength and speed — while equipped with various features.

The ABS and LR-approved structures and scantlings will be 10 percent in excess of both rules.

The vessels will be fitted with a 45,000-bhp main engine, about 6,500- hp above the largest engine that has been installed in a modern VLCC. These engines will provide the vessels with a loaded service speed of at least 17.2 knots. An inerting system utilizes the double scrubbing method developed in- house by Hellespont - resulting in sul- phur dioxide levels less than 1 ppm.

FPSO Order Taken

From Nigeria, Australia

Samsung has been granted orders worth a combined $250 million from

Nigeria and Australia. The company said it will construct a floating produc- tion and storage offloading (FPSO) ves- sel valued at $90 million for the Niger- ian arm of Shell Petroleum Co., as well as an FPSO for the Australian unit of

Phillips Petroleum worth $160 million.

The new orders allow Samsung to reach its full-year sales target of $2.2 billion. The company sold $2.04 billion worth of vessels in 1998.
