U.K. Yards Eagerly Await $475M Ferry Deal

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said his government will take the needs of domestic shipbuilders into account when it awards a $475.1 million contract for naval ferries. But Blair, facing pres- sure from shipbuilders and oil industry workers fighting to stop the contract going abroad, also said his government was bound by strict European Union rules in awarding the contract. The Min- istry of Defense has asked for bids to build six RoRo equipment transport ves- sels, a deal worth about $474 million.

Because the RoRo ferries will be used for commercial not military purposes,

European Union competition rules apply which do not allow preferential treat- ment for British yards.
