usable space below the waterline at both ends of the vessel. Under the leadership of Suren Menon, execu- tive vice president in charge of cruise ship operations,

Cascade's team was able to make the most of the limit- ed space available. In the bow, Cascade's electricians prepped the route for the power and control cables for the thruster while the ship was still dockside. Menon's engineering team worked on the drydock floor, using its proven method of mounting a cutting torch on a radius arm rotating on the bow thruster cen- terline. Known as a Cascade innovation, this process automatically ensures a perfect fit for the flared thruster mouth on the convex curvc of the bow plating.

The only available position for the vessel's additional stern thruster, weighing 4.5 tons, was

SIEMENS

Intelligent automation sys- tems from Siemens help to ensure a most safe and comfortable operation of shipboard systems.

Process control is being delegated to small, intelli- gent units which operate on a decentralized basis and are linked with local net- works. This result enhances safety and reduces cabling.

Future oriented ideas also stand behind the Siemens diesel-electric propulsion systems. For example the economical operation through optimal utilization of fuel for diesel engines to generate electrical power, even in partial load ranges.

Or the high availability through modular design with small probability of total loss of propulsion power.
