Room with a View
In addition to mechanical and environ- mental achievements onboard Spirit, the ship is sure to garner top marks from the owner and cruisers alike. The trend for more outside rooms and more rooms with balconies has been building for years. On Spirit, Carnival and K.MY deliver with an amazing 70 percent of all staterooms featuring a balcony - 80 per- cent of which are outside staterooms.
This was made possible, in part, by designing a narrower superstructure, which allowed one more deck with pas- senger staterooms. There are a total of 1,062 staterooms, and Spirit has a pas- senger capacity of 2,680. In the super- structure. most of the staterooms face the sea. and the technical spaces, includ- ing the air conditioning machinery, are placed in the center of the ship, behind the passenger corridors.

Spirit Earns The Green Star
Carnival Spirit fulfills RINA's new
Green Star environmental standards, consisting of two voluntary RINA class notations. Clean Sea and Clean Air. A leading feature of the Clean Sea nota- tion is that bunker tanks must be installed over double bottoms, to pre- vent accidental discharge of oil. Ships must also be fitted with holding tanks for all black and gray water waste, to prevent organic pollution, and must meet the standards set down in the vol- untary IMO Marpol Annex IV.
The Clean Air notation sets limits on
SOx and NOx emissions from engines, and requires compliance with the volun- tary standards of Annex VI to Marpol.
There is a three percent limit on sulfur content in fuel that can be burnt, and
RINA also sets requirements for refrig- eration gases and their containment in the case of an accident.

No other branch of shipping makes such high demands on vessel availability and schedule integrity as does container shipping. That's why smart container carriers choose the market leader. More than half of all container ship newbuildings are awarded GL class with nearly a third of the world's container fleet classed with GL.
GL was the first classification society to • include fatigue factors in the scantling rules • publish container lashing rules • calculate global strength and vibrations for Post
Panama* container ships • introduce "girderless" holds in large container ships www.germanlloyd.org
