NOAA Christens New Research Vessel For California Sanctuaries

NOAA's Channel Islands National

Marine Sanctuary hosted, on May 12, 2003, the christening of R/V

Shearwater, a high-speed Teknicraft alu- minum-hull catamaran research vessel.

Constructed by All American Marine of

Bellingham, Wash., the 62-ft. (18.8-m) vessel is designed to step up the state-of- the-art research in Channel Islands,

Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine

Sanctuaries. The R/V Shearwater is the first research vessel built specifically for sanctuary use. The vessel's onboard facilities and equipment can support extensive research and scuba dive oper- ations such as marine mammal and seabird research, archeological/cultural research and collecting data for emerg- ing management issues.
