MTU: 2002 was a Good Year
MTU Friedrichshafen reported contin- ued successful corporate development in 2002 revenues rising nearly 13 percent to nearly $1.3 billion. The company's top performer and internal growth driver is the ship segment, which accounted for more than $600 million, or 47 percent of
MTU revenues overall. The number of engines produced and sold by MTU increased, as it sold 5,500 units from its
Friedrichshafen location, a 10 percent increase over last year.
The company, long noted for its adher- ence to a generously funded R&D initia- tive, did not disappoint last year, with an approximate $81 million last year — the sum total of in-house and third-party financed development expenses — ear- marked to this end. The main focus was

GE's LM6000 Designed to Be Versatile
GE's LM6000 is now available in a gas turbine-generator set for a variety of marine propulsion system configura- tions. The LM6000 was introduced in 1990, and is an efficient simple cycle gas turbine with an efficiency of 41.9 percent at the ISO rating point. The industrial LM6000 fleet has grown to more than 600 units — all of which drive electric generators — accumulat- ing more than seven million operating

The LM6000 is the high power member of the GE LM aeroderiv- ative gas turbine offerings. It generates 36.6 MW of power on a Navy standard day (100°F), depending upon the operat- ing profile for ship applications.
The powerful LM6000 marine gas tur- bine can be coupled with an electric gen- erator making an LM6000 marine gas turbine-generator set. GE furnishes the complete marinized LM6000 gas tur- bine-generator set using a generator from a manufacturer acceptable to the customer.
Currently there are 14 LM6000 gas turbines operating in marine installa- tions such as on FPSOs in the harsh
North Sea environment. These engines have accumulated over 260,000 fired hours in service.
