July 2006 29 their design, in that the manufacturer has been busy keeping up with orders, and in its view, the engines were more than competitive in their ranges.

However, as the company projects a slowing few years, it embarked upon a plan to modify and improve its

S/K80ME-C and K90ME/ME-C engines — the new "Mark 9" engines - — with an eye toward boosting power while adopting a number of the latest design features, features geared toward saving significant amounts of weight and, in the end, user costs. Based on results announced by MAN B&W, it seems this end has been met.

The redesigned engines are a complete workover, from the bedplate, framebox, cylinder frame, combustion chamber to the exhaust valve. While the new engines are touted for saving the shipowner weight and subsequent cost, as well as the manufacturer time and money in producing the power units, eyes were always kept on ensuring the robust nature of the engines. Thomas

Knudsen, Senior Vice President of

Research & Development, explained that shipowners are pressing manufac- turers, particularly diesel engine mak- ers, to raise the figures which indicate the wear life of components, as they seek to go longer between major over- hauls. There is even one shipowner who reportedly is trying to extend drydock- ing to every seven years (vs. the tradi- tional five), due to superior coatings.

The modernized K80/90 and S80 engines have new performance data that the company believes positions them as extremely competitive. The mean effec- tive pressure (mep) of 20 bar and the maximum firing pressure of 160 bar was chosen to offer good specific fuel oil

Diesel fuel prices won’t be bottoming out anytime soon.

One way to attack the problem is switching to high performance fuel injectors from Interstate Diesel.

Fuel savings of 3% and greater have been documented in independent tests with our

ECOTIP ®

Superstack Injectors and verified by feedback from users.

Results Confirmed

Electro-Motive ran similar tests which validated these findings.

Estimates in savings range from $10,000 to $18,000 per engine, per year, depending on the duty cycle.

Further Options

For savings greater than 3%, specify our designed-to-application

ECOTIP ®

Special Injector. It can be specially configured to maximize fuel savings…or our ECOTIP ®

Ultrastack Injector, with its “straight-shot” fuel delivery system which reduces the fuel penalty in Electro-Motive Tier 0 engine kits.

Added to fuel savings, these injectors reduce smoke, No x and particulate matter for a win-win situation.

In mid May His Royal Highness

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark officially opened MAN B&W Diesel's new five-star attraction, DieselHouse, a technical and cultural experience center dedicated to the diesel engine technology. DieselHouse is on the site of the H.C. Ørsted power station, in the building housing the B&W diesel engine from 1932, which was used as late as 2003 to start up the East Danish power grid after a major collapse.

The heart of the exhibition is the huge engine, which was the world's largest diesel engine for 30 years. In addition to the engine DieselHouse has on display everything from the most modern interactive exhibitions to an extensive collection of ship and engine models from the production at the

B&W shipyard and engineering works. The engine will be started up once a month during DieselHouse's opening hours, so visitors can experi- ence the sound and smell of a diesel engine.
