NEWSBY THE NUMBERSEU Shows Solid Growth in 1H 2011 European companies have established a strong leadership in the development and deployment of offshore wind power, a trend expected to continue as countries such as Germany shutter its nuclear power industry in the wake of the Japan meltdown earlier this year, and search for efficient, clean energy alternatives. "While I see several positive trends for the European offshore wind power in- dustry, we are not home and dry yet. The sector is coming out of the financial cri- sis but is still facing a potential worsen- ing of the general economic crisis. The number of banks providing capital for offshore wind farm investments is steadily growing, although there is a continued need for attracting an increas-ing number of large institutional in- vestors to offshore wind farms - presently the largest construction proj- ects going on in Europe," said ChristianKjaer, chief executive officer of EWEA. The leadership of European countriesin this regard is confirmed by the Euro- pean Wind Energy Association (EWEA) recently published offshore wind energy statistics for the first half year of 2011. The statistics show: Percentage increase in in-stallations of offshore ca- pacity compared to the first half of 2010.New offshore wind turbines, with a total capacity of 348MW, were connected to the power grids in the UK, Ger- many and Norway during the first six months of 2011. The size of wind turbinesoffshore Europe are grow- ing, as the size of the in-stalled offshore wind turbines averaged 3.4 MW - up from an average of 2.9 MW during the first half of 2010.Offshore Wind Power 10Maritime Reporter & Engineering News Summary of Work at Offshore Wind Farms between Jan. 1-June 30, 2011 Belgium UK Germany Norway Total Number of farms 1 7 2 1 11Number of foundations installed 4 108 16 1 129Number of turbines installed 0 101 6 1 108Number of turbines connected 0 68 32 1 101MW fully connected to the grid 0 244.8 103.3 0.015 348.1Total MW of projects (once completed) 148 2238 448.3 10 2844.3 Pictured in the Background: Scroby Sands Windfarm, Norfolk U.K. The Easytrak Nexus has been deployed by the Geosurvey De- partment of Emu Ltd on several high resolution Windfarm Engineering and UXO (Unexploded ordnance) surveys.
