46Maritime Reporter & Engineering News TECHNICALPRODUCTSMHI: Full-scale MarineDiesel Testing Facility Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) completed ?4UE-X3,? a testing facility for full-scale low-speed, two- stroke marine diesel engines, in the company's Kobe Shipyard and Machin- ery Works in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The facility will be used for testing of various technologies to respond to strin- gent environmental regulations that are expected to be applied to the shipping industry in the future. The facility will also be used for verification testing of "UEC-LSGi," a dual-fuel low-speed marine diesel that is capable of usingnatural gas for its fuel, which the com- pany has recently been developing. The 4-cylinder testing machine, with a cylinder bore of 600mm when com- pleted, was developed based on the "Mitsubishi UEC60LSE-Eco," a low- speed marine diesel engine of the com-pany. The testing machine will be used for verification of various technologies to comply with NOx (nitrogen oxide)emission regulations Tier III of IMO (International Maritime Organization), which will apply to the engine of shipsto be newly built after 2016, requiring the reduction of NOx emission by 80%.Adjoining the testing facility, a train- ing facility and practicing room have been set up. Volvo Penta Helps Coast Guard Save Fuel The first in a series of five Coast Guard vessels reached its final port des- tination in Falkenberg at the West coast of Sweden, courtesy of a Volvo Penta propulsion system that is said to reducefuel consumption by approximately30%. It is the first ship in a series of five which will be used primarily for mar- itime surveillance, border control, and fisheries control, protection of the envi- ronment, rescue and civil protection, monitoring and diving operations. The Volvo Penta IPS 1050 complete propul- sion system was selected, a system which consists of triple Volvo Penta IPS 1050 based on 3 x D13-800 Rating 4 en-gines at 588 kW each, giving at total propulsion power of 1764 kW and 3 x IPS 3 fully integrated pod units (gear- box, exhaust system, rudder and steer- ing machinery). Engines already meetEPA tier 3 emission levels, and the sys- tem is type approved by DNV. During test trials the vessel reached a speed of 32 knots fully loaded and the time to ac-celerate from idle to 20 knots was only 7.5 seconds. The steerable IPS pod units with forward facing contra rotating pro- pellers are designed to give very good grip in the water without slip and create an active rudder control with all thrust pointing in the desired direction. The good grip and the low end torque are used to create good acceleration in allsea conditions and allow the vessel to steer sharply without cavitation and loss of speed. The combination of twin turbo engine and Duoprop technology pro-vides a bollard pull above 10 tons ABB Chosen for FiveMulti-Purpose Vessels ABB won an order from Rickmers Group in Germany to supply advisory systems for dynamic trim optimizationand fleet management solutions for five multi-purpose vessels. Trim optimiza- tion means ballasting or loading the shipto achieve the floating position that con- sumes the least propulsion power. The operator of the vessels, Rickmers-Linie, a leading global specialist for the oceantransportation of break-bulk, heavy lift and project cargo ships, and deliveries for large-scale projects, is a member of the Hamburg based Rickmers Group. ABC DebutsNew EngineWith the song ?Eye of the Tiger? pro- viding the back beat, Anglo Belgian Corporation provided a lavish intro- duction of its new medium speed en- gines ? the new DL36 range ?at the SMM 12 exhibition in Hamburg, Ger- many. For 100 years ABC has been one of Europe?s leading medium speed diesel engine manufacturers, with long reference lists in ship, locomotive and power generation. ABC was originally established in 1912 by a group of industrialists, withparticipation of the inventor of the diesel engine, Rudolf Diesel himself. Its engineering and production facili- ties are located in Ghent (BE).With the current DX and DZ range, ABC is offering solutions in the power range of 150-4000 kW aiming for themarine coastal, fishing, dredging-, pa- trol-ships, tugboats and inland trans-portation vessels. The new DL36 range will expand the ABC market to larger vessels such as ferries, coasters, off- shore vessels, military ships, dredging applications and large tugboats. With the 8DL36 (5200 kW) and the soon tofollow V-versions (up to 10.400 kW), ABC will be able to supply all majorshipyards with solutions for any type or size vessel. The DL36 range will also allow ABC to be competitive in the 20- 80 MW power plant range. With a bore x stroke of 365 mm x 420 mm, the DL36 will be set to deliver 650 kW/cylinder at 750 rpm with BMep of only 24 bar, ensuring that the tradi- tional ABC reliability and robustness is maintained. Introducing technologysuch as EGR, 2-stage turbocharging and an optimized common rail system, the engine?s emissions are designed to meet the IMO-3 requirements withoutcatalyst, while maintaining competitive fuel and oil consumption. To be as ver- satile as possible, a wide variety of fuels like MDO, HFO, dual fuel and bio-fuels are possible. The 6- and 8- cylinder in-line engines will focus mainly on the marine market where the V-engines (12 and 16 cylinders) will penetrate the large generator set appli- cations to be found in thermal power plants as the 16DV36 will produce over 10 MW. The 6 cylinder will be ready to ship second half of 2013, followed by the 8 cylinder in 2014. Email: [email protected] MTU Series 4000 Workboat Engines Tognum enhanced its MTU Series 4000 Ironmen workboat en- gines for compliance with US EPA Tier 3 emissions regulations. The new Series 4000 engines will be available with 8, 12, or 16 cylin- ders for use in diesel-mechanical and diesel-electric propulsion sys-tems or for powering on-board gensets. Installed in diesel-mechanical systems, the Ironmen engines will be able to cover power requirements from 750 to 2,680 bhp (560 to 2,000 kW), while diesel-electric drives and marine gensets will deliver 650 to 2,000 kW power output. No exhaust gas aftertreatment will be needed and the first engines will be available in mid-2013. The new design allows for an engine input power of up to 410 kW (550 bhp). The UJ340HT in particular, accord- ing to the maker, will be of benefit to boat builders of Seismic, Landing Craft, Cargo carrying, Commercial and Military Tow vessels, where high static thrust is a prerequisite. The UJ340HT has a similar physical size and weight to the standard UJ340 wa- terjet, but uses a different impeller to achieve higher thrust per horsepower compared to the standard UJ340.Following Ultra Dynamics practice, this new model is built from marine grade aluminum alloy, with the im- peller, impeller ring and shafts made from stainless steel.MR#9 (42-49):MR Template 9/13/2012 10:37 AM Page 46
